The Cao Cao’s Underground Military Tunnel

The Cao Cao’s Underground Military Tunnel: buried underground atthe old downtown of Bozhou, the tunnel extends, from its center ofDayushou, at all directions to the outside of the city. The tunnelis said to be built by Cao Cao initially at the end of the East HanDynasty. Sub-tunnels crossly intermingle with each other, showingmiraculous arrangements and grand scales. So far, nearly 8,000m hasbeen discovered and this greatly goes beyond the value of apreserved ancient town on the ground. The Tunnel is reputed as “theUnderground Great Wall” and was publicized as an important heritagesite under state protection by the State Council on June 25th,2001.

The ancient sub-tunnels discovered now are with differentstructures, widths and heights due to the long history anddifferent constructions at different ages. The distance of theancient sub-tunnels from the ground is generally 2m to 3m and 6m atthe maximum. Four structures including earth-wood structure,tile-earth structure, tile-wood structure and fully tile structureare included. Types here include one-way tunnel, two-way paralleltunnel and upper and down double tunnels and cubic crossed tunnels.Height of the tunnel is generally 1.6m to 2.1m and width 0.6m to0.9m. Corners inside the tunnel are all T-shaped joints. Thedistance between the two-way parallel tunnels is roughly 2-3.5m andthere are square speaking holes and military facilities such ascat-ear holes, blindages, obstacles arches, barrier walls, leghindrances and traps and supporting facilities such as vent holesand lamp niches are equipped.
